With strong Irish communities in Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore, why not have an Asian Gaelic Games tournament? The founding members saw this as a fantastic opportunity to get all the Irish in Asia together for a weekend of football and craic! After Trojan work by founding members, the first Asian finals were held in Manila in 1996. The dream had become a reality.
In June 1996 the very first Asian Gaelic Games took place in Manila with half a dozen teams descending on the captial of the Philippines from different countries around Asia including Taiwan, Hong Kong & Japan. The Gaems were held at the Nomad's Club from 31st May to 2nd June.
Way back in 1996 it was only a Men's competiton, with the Ladies yet to organise themselves - - and craic was the main goal of the weekend.
The final of the tournament was played between Hong Kong GAA and Taiwan Celts, with Hong Kong scraping through in a closely contested final.
