2008 - Penang

In 2008 the Guinness Asian Gaelic Games stayed in South East Asia - this time held on the beautiful tropical island of Penang, Malaysia in the Andaman Sea.  The games were held at the Polo Grounds in historic Georgetown and this year saw the formation of the Penang Pumas a club drawn from the Penang Medical college & this year also saw the formation of the Jakarta Dragonflies team.

At the 2008 AGG we had Uachtaráin C.L.G Nickey Brennan in attendance, along with Seamus Howlin Chairman of the Overseas Committee.  The opening ceremony of the games was held at the Traders Hotel in Georgetown where there was a display of both the local Malay dancing and young Irish dancers trained in Singapore.  That year, the AGG officially supported Streets International - a charity for the homeless operating in Vietnam.

To the Games, where in the Men's Football Hong Kong GAA won three in a row in the DB Cup in an extremely tight final against Singapore.  Dubai B repeated their achievement from the previous year & won the Men's B Cup, Orang Eire scored their first AGG silverware with the Men's plate and Taiwan Celts came away with the Men's Bowl.

Singapore overcame Dubai Celts to win the second Hurling cup and in the Ladies Cup - Dubai Celts showed their great class & skill to come away with their 3-in-a-row against Seoul Gaels in the final.  Singapore won the Ladies Plate.

The closing ceremony was held at the beautiful Shangri-La Rasa Resort - where the first Asian All-star awards were presented, along with a Club of the Year award for Orang Eire & a Hall of Fame award to the incomprable Noellie Lennon of Shanghai.  Coach of the Year was awarded to Teresa Ryan, coach of the Singapore Cubs.   The first Alan Power MVP Trophy was presented to MJ Tierney & the Ladies MVP was Sarah Doran of Dubai Celts.

This year the Toucan returned to Singapore with help from an tUasal O'M and despite a desperate kidnap attempt by Dubai Celts on the Monday after the games!
