Dubai Celts to host 4th International Gulf Gaelic Sevens
Gulf Gaelic Sevens 2010
Dubai, August 31th, 2009: The Dubai Celts GAA Club, will play host for the fourth year running to the worlds’ largest International Sevens Gaelic Football and Hurling Tournament.
The Gulf Gaelic Games 2010 will take place on Friday and Saturday 26th and 27th February. Thousands of miles from home, our native games will be alive and kicking with competitions in Gaelic football, hurling, camogie and ladies football catering for all kinds of teams from serious to social, schools, juveniles, and veterans. Over two days up to 1,000 players will take part in the event.
In the past, visiting clubs from Ireland to the event have included Longstone and Bredagh from Down, Limavaddy and Eoghan Roe from Derry, Kilmacud Crokes, Civil Service and St Brigids from Dublin, St Catherines, St. Nicks, Erin’s Owen, Carrigtwohill and Aghada / Killeagh from Cork, St Munnas from Westmeath, Clonmel Commercials from Tipperary, etc., etc. The tournament has also developed an international flavour with visiting teams from London, Belgium, Jersey, Munich, Amsterdam, Singapore and Hong Kong, plus our fellow Gulf-Gaels from Qatar, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain / Saudi and Oman.
“Last year’s tournament was a huge success, and we expect 2010 to be bigger and better again with over 60 teams participating” commented Darragh McGreevy, Chairman of Dubai Celts. He believes that the games “not only offers a great opportunity for the Irish in the community to come together to showcase their unique games to the people of Dubai, but it also brings together people from all over the globe to experience Arabic culture.”
What a better way for a GAA club to prepare for the championship season than experiencing a Dubai winter whilst playing in state of art facilities at the Emirates “7evens” Complex. You will be promised azure blue skies, balmy temperatures in the mid-20´s and a wealth of attractions too numerous to mention.
About the Dubai Celts: Dubai has now established itself as an oasis in the Gulf desert for our own Gaelic Games. The Dubai Celts club was formed in Dubai in 1995 by a group of enthusiastic Irish players who wanted to bring a bit of home to their adopted land and so from here the club has grown from strength to strength. It all started back on St Patrick’s Day 1994 in Riyadh, KSA with a hurling match between 2 companies (S.A. Kent & Armco). Following this 2 teams were set up in Saudi and Dubai. The club played in its first annual Middle East tournament later that year
Dubai Celts have gone from strength to strength in the Middle East and Asia. They are the reigning Asian Ladies Football and Men’s B Football champions. The Men’s A football tasted their last success back in 2005 and are ready for the challenge they face to retain the honours back from Carrigtwohill as they are keen to avenge the Men’s A and Hurling final defeat. The Celts ladies have been dominant in Asia over the last couple of seasons winning the Asian Gaelic games with a record three times in a row. In addition to this, three of Celts Ladies picked up Asian All–Star awards with Sarah Doran piping everyone to the post to win the most Valuable Player of the Tournament. They last won the Gulf Gaelic Games Tournament in 2007 after beating Kilmacud Crokes so they will be back to avenge title back from St. Catherines.
