2017 Hurling and Camogie Tournament
On a clear summer day (aren’t they all summer days in Singapore) hurling and camogie teams from Singapore, Thailand, and Hong Kong descended on Dempsey’s Cricket Club. This year four teams took part in the Hurling tournament – Singapore 1, Singapore 2, Thai GAA, and Hong Kong GAA; while in the camogie Singapore as hosts took aim at the visiting Asian All-star team.
The games were very competitive with all teams contesting some very tight games. As the day ended, all the teams had one loss and the finalists were decided by points difference and Singapore 1 were in the final against Hong Kong. These two teams have always had tight, fiery, competitive games and this one was no different. At the end of the day Singapore came out winners in a fantastic game of hurling.
On the camogie end, we had the two teams play some warm comes and the games were split evenly. The final, as with the hurling, was another tight game with the visiting Asian All-stars eventually coming out winners.
At the end of the day we also had a Poc Fada contest for the men and women and Mike Barry from Singapore won the men’s challenge, while Clare Doyle won the women’s challenge. The men’s MVP went to the classy hurler Dean Madden and the women’s MVP went to Eimear Mulhall.
A big thank you to Tony Bass – who came all the way from Europe to referee the games!!!
Over 300 people came out to watch the games and were thoroughly entertained. Afterwards everyone went to McGettigans and listened to Damien Dempsey and enjoyed a few pints well into the early morning hours of Sunday.
