2017 South Asian Gaelic Games Review
The Saigon Gaels took charge of the 2017 SAGG’s and held an outstanding tournament. All teams arrived in Ho Chi Min City on the Friday to wonderful storms and dark clouds but thankfully these did not continue onto the Saturday. From early (very early for some) on Saturday the games took place at RMIT. The facilities were excellent with two excellent grass fields and an MC that kept the players on their toes.
Just as the facilities were excellent, the football played was very good with all the teams coming ready to play and committed. Both the mens and womens tournaments gave an excellent exhibition of football being played throughout the day with the games being played in glorious weather. Well that was until the final of the Senior Cup. Just as those games were about to start – the black clouds came back and the heavens opened on the players and supporters. Despite the atrocious weather for the senior finals – the games were action packed with some great attacking play and scores. In the Senior Cups Thai mens GAA took their first senior championship by beating Singapore, while on the ladies side Singapore GAA won the Cup. In the Senior plate competition, we saw Singapore beat Saigon in the mens division while the home side Saigon beat Taiwan in the ladies plate. Finally, in the junior competition, we saw the Orang Eires mens team beat Johor Baru/Manila and the Viet Celts defeat Singapore in the ladies bowl.
The night ended with some fantastic food, a few drinks and some great music as the hosts and all the teams celebrated a successful 2017 South Asian Gaelic Games.
