The first South East Asian Games & Vietnam's first ever Gaelic football tournament, was held at UNIS in Ciputra International City, Hanoi on June 28, 2008 with teams from Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam competing for the honours and a one-off exhibition game between two female teams from Vietnam and Singapore. In all 4 men’s and 2 women’s team competed. The Viet-Celts fielded 3 teams including a women’s team for the first time. The teams arrived on Fri 25th and attended the Opening Ceremony that was kindly hosted by the Irish Embassy at the Press Club. The chairman of the ACB and the other teams were impressed by the effort made by the club to welcome them to Ha Noi and by the profile the event was given by Ha Noi Peoples Committee and the Irish Embassy. A special T-Shirt was designed by one of our players (Steve Christensen) and available at the function. After the meal and draw many of the visiting players and the Viet-Celts retired to Finnegan’s for a few quiet drinks. On the day of the games UNIS playing field looked like Croke Park on an All-Ireland Sunday, and our new goal posts glistened in the morning sunshine. Refreshments and food, under the shade of a large marquee, were available on the sideline and a PA system was set up to assist with commentary and announcements. A strong Singapore men’s Team won the MAG sponsored SEA Games Shield. The Viet-Celts Blue Team came third behind the runners-up Malaysia. Both men’s teams performed admirably but were up against strong opposition. Our women’s team was narrowly beaten by Singapore in an exciting final that was the highlight of the games. Our team was 90% Vietnamese and included two Irish and one Australian player. The games were also the first to be held using the 9 a side rule. Paraic Mc Grath (ACB Chairman) done a great job refereeing all the games. A presentation buffet was organized at Jaspas Restaurant in central Ha Noi and awards were handed out to the winning teams and best players by the ACB and MAG. Again this was excellently organized and supported by the teams and sponsors. The club in general should be commended for this impressive show of teamwork and coordination. MVP Awards for the tournament were presented to Pat Gorham of Orang Eire & Catherine O'Leary from Singapore.
