The Shanghai Gaelic Football Club

INTRO

Hailing from the financial capital of the world’s leading consumer of everything, introducing the Shanghai Gaelic Football Club…..

As Hu Jintao exclaimed as he finished his anchor leg of the official post-tournament baijiu race at the recent All-China Games, “Ir Er Lan, wo ai Shanghai Gaelic”. The Shanghai GAA now owns the official Communist Party license on all things Irish in Shanghai. With all eligible Consulate employees as members, and sponsored by Moore Watson and the Blarney Stone (the best Irish Pub in town), Shanghai Gaelic are the gracious beneficiaries of extensive Irish hospitality in the Paris of the East.

As with all Gaelic teams at the illustrious Asian Gaelic Games, we drink all night long; but, we like to think of ourselves as more than one-dimensional. With undisputed world titles in DUI Go-karting, impromptu Creedence Clearwater Revival KTV performances and synchronized teppanyaki consumption Shanghai Gaelic are the multi-skilled bar room brawlers from the mouth of the Huangpu.

FORM GUIDE – SHANGHAI SAINTS (MEN)

Throw the form guide out the window. A team laden with has-beens and never-were’s, the Shanghai mens team may be sporting a mane full of grey hair/ none, but will be out to upset the Guinness lorry in 2009. Coached by the odd couple and with a roster featuring several Games legends, expect this team to be loose in the tight, loose in the loose, and even looser in the night. Carrying a few too many Irishman and even the odd Englishman, may struggle if the weather isn’t shite.

FORM GUIDE – SHANGHAI SIRENS (WOMEN)

Beware the rampaging fillies from Shanghai. Looking to extend the streek (sic) that saw them claim a dramatic first victory at the All-China Gaelic Games, this international contingent of mercenaries will bring anything but mercy. With a global breeding program infusing the team with hybrid vigor, this ragtag young bunch of battlers are sounding the siren. Think East Germany and expect anything from first to last from this bunch.

With thanks to the Penang 2008 team for a great games and looking forward to Bangkok 2009!
